FIRE SUMMARY - SOUTH LAKE TAHOE:  A forest fire near pristine Lake Tahoe has destroyed 254 homes and charred over 3100 acres of forest land.  Winds initially blew the fire toward Lake Tahoe through bone-dry wooded terrain around South Lake Tahoe, the popular vacation community on North America's largest alpine lake located near the California and Nevada border.

The blaze, which has also displaced over 1000 people, may well turn out to be one of the worst in the Tahoe Basin in over a century.  There have been no injuries or fatalities reported.  The fire apparently started at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, 6/24/07, near Angora Ridge, about 5 miles southwest of the city of South Lake Tahoe. The cause is under investigation yet investigators believe the fire was started by humans and an illegal campfire. A tip line has been established for information on the fire call... please call (800) 468-4408. Property damage is now being estimated at over $150 million dollars with the majority of displaced homeowners being locals, not vacation homeowners. Firefighting costs are estimated at nearly $11 million dollars.

Both KRLT 93.9 and 1490 KOWL are updating listeners as new information becomes available.

(07-02) 09:50 am PDT SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Angora Fire has now reached 100% containment - The incident command center reports the Angora fire is now 100% contained as of this morning. Here is a briefing issued by incident command:

Fire Activity - Fire activity is predicted to be light today. Winds will range from 5 to 10 mph with temperatures in the mid-70s. Smoke will continue to be visible within the fire area. However, these interior smokes are deep within the fire and are not a threat to the fire line.

Crews are using infrared technology to monitor and secure fire lines. Today, the Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team will begin their assessment of the burned area focusing on emergency stabilization of the watershed. At 6:00 tonight the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will resume responsibility for management of the fire.

Evacuations, Closures and Restrictions - A Forest closure order for the burned area is in effect July 2 through November 30, 2007. All trails and roads leading into the burned area on forest system lands are closed to the public.

Within the Tahoe Basin area, campfires are only allowed within hosted fee campgrounds. No open fires or charcoal barbeques will be allowed on public lands. Only propane stoves are allowed with a 2007 fire permit. No fireworks are allowed in any area.

Due to very dry fuels, fire restrictions have gone into effect throughout the state of California. A National Fire Prevention Team arrived today to assist local agencies with their prevention needs.

Motorists also now have access to the affected fire areas of North Upper Truckee Road and Tahoe Mountain.

(07-02) 12:00pm PDT SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - South Lake Tahoe is ready for the 4th of July holiday -- The community of South Lake Tahoe and its local residents have suffered great loss as a result of the recent Angora fire. However, with the fire now 100% contained, the message to the 70,000+ people planning to travel into the Lake Tahoe region for the holiday is that roads are open and local businesses, hotels, motels, casinos, beaches etc... are open and ready for business. Local services are fully functional and the message is "business as normal". The annual fireworks show in South Lake Tahoe and in the various cities on the North Shore will go as scheduled. (06-28) 09:00 PDT SOUTH LAKE TAHOEWind and weather reprieve allows firefighters to gain ground on fire -- A reprieve from high winds on Wednesday allowed firefighters to gain ground on the Angora fire which remains this morning at 55 percent contained. However, firefighters cautioned that blistery conditions could further hamper containment efforts. Forecasts in the Tahoe Basin area are calling for winds of 15-20 mph this morning and gusts up to 40mph expected this afternoon. There is a Red Flag wind warning issued by the National Weather Service in effect through today, said Todd Chaponot, spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service.

(06-27) 09:00 PDT SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Evacuations Ordered -- Angora Fire officials have ordered the mandatory evacuation this morning of the following South Lake Tahoe neighborhood - Residents on West Way, Lukin Way, Ward Way, Weir Way and 15th Street north of Highway 89 are under mandatory evacuation orders.

The last report from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department hotline is that mandatory evacuations remain in effect for those living in the Gardner Mountain subdivisions from Lake Tahoe Boulevard north to Gardner Street including Highway 89; Highway 89 from 15th St. north; and Upper Truckee Road from Wintoon north and Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Voluntary evacuations include: Tahoe Island, Highway 50 north to 15th street and east of Highway 89 and Tahoe Keys area.

(06-27) 08:42 PDT SOUTH LAKE TAHOE -- Fire officials are bracing for a rough afternoon as winds are expected to kick up in the late morning, stoking fears that the Angora Fire could jump Highway 89 and spread into several densely populated, lake-front areas in South Lake Tahoe.

The number of threatened structures nearly doubled overnight, with about 950 homes and another 325 commercial properties currently in the potential path of the 3,100-acre blaze. About 2,000 people remain evacuated from their homes south of Highway 89, which is closed, and officials said that they do not expect to lift the evacuation order today.

If they can hold the fire in place, officials said this morning, they may be able to let some residents return home on Thursday.

The largest danger lies in the prospect of the blaze jumping fire lines, as it did on Tuesday, and heading into nearby developments. Incident Commander Rich Hawkins said that officials are particularly worried about several developments straddling Highway 89, including Tallac Village. Highway 89 is currently closed.

Tuesday 6/26 4:00pm PST SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - There has just been an evacuation notice issued for the Gardner Mountain and High School area.  The fire is not contained and residents in the Gardner Mountain and High School are ordered to evacuate.
