Winter Recreation - On The Slopes

Geoff Burke, VirtualTahoe.com's Sports Editor, hits the slopes at Lake Tahoe to bring you an experienced "insider view." In this issue, Geoff checks out the runs and fun at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Sierra-at-Tahoe

My favorite ski buddy Brian, leaps off some rocks in the trees at Sierra.

“Lake Tahoe’s Full Service, Value Oriented Day Use Snowsports Resort”, just about says it all when you’re talking about Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort. Sierra offers activities for everyone in the family no matter what age or ability level. Three high speed quad chairs, one triple chair, five double chairs, one “Magic Carpet” surface lift, a children’s surface tow and a tubing hill, allows you to access over 2,000 acres of snow covered terrain at this must visit Lake Tahoe snowsports resort.

This is the start to one of my favorite lines in the trees at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

For the last 20 years I have been riding the powder at Sierra and I am still finding new places to explore at this vast area. The trees at Sierra have become my favorite place to find those untracked powder runs with no one around, and with a high speed quad chair that gets you back to the top in no time, it can make for the powder day of a lifetime. Here is a little local tip for those of you don’t mind riding the powder. Try the trees off of the west bowl quad chair, they are rarely skied and have a very fun pitch.

An adventurous skier finds some fresh powder in front of one of the many giant boulders you might encounter.

This local skier enjoys some freshies first run of the morning.

If powder just isn’t your thing, Sierra has some of the best beginner and intermediate trails which are groomed to perfection every day. Maybe your looking for alternative activities like terrain parks or half pipes, Sierra has some of the best around. Riders can choose between two terrain parks (ski and snowboard) and two half pipes, one regular pipe with 9 foot walls and a super pipe with 17 foot walls. I also discovered a skier/boarder cross course just off the backside of the mountain where you can race your buddies to the bottom.

Sierra-at-Tahoe is one of those rare resorts left that goes out of their way to keep you coming back for more. Whether it’s the excellent food service or the lower than average ticket prices, this resort makes it easy to come back to. Free shuttle buses run constantly from the South Shore or the drive is just minutes away. Sierra has a very good website so just visit them at www.sierratahoe.com for all the current information. I had so much fun taking these pictures that I just might have to go back tomorrow. See you on the slopes!
