Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race

FACT SHEET:
GREAT LAKE TAHOE STERNWHEELER RACE AND
THE TAHOE QUEEN & M.S. DIXIE II -- BRAG OF THE BRIDGE

WHAT: This event is an annual competition between Lake Tahoe’s paddlewheelers, the M.S. Dixie II and the Tahoe Queen. On a six-mile course – with the start/finish line at the California/Nevada border near the South Shore casinos – these boats will participate in the only authentic sternwheeler race west of the Mississippi. Festooned in colorful banners and balloons, each vessel will be filled with hundreds of participants, many dressed in 1800s period costumes. A flotilla of private sailboats, motor yachts and other water vessels will also follow the mighty sternwheelers as they navigate and vie for the prized “Tahoe Cup”.
HISTORY: Last year’s victory for the Tahoe Queen was its second consecutive win, bringing the series standings to 3-to-2 in favor of the Dixie II.
WHERE: The M.S. Dixie II docks at Zephyr Cove Marina at Zephyr Cove, NV, four miles into Nevada. The Tahoe Queen docks at Ski Run Marina in South Lake Tahoe, CA, one mile from the state line casinos. The two join each other at the start/finish line – the California/Nevada border, just off Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course near the South Shore casinos.
WHEN: The race begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August. 30
TICKETS: Public tickets are available to ride either boat for $50. The fare includes an all-American champagne brunch, costumed entertainers and the chance to be aboard the winning vessel. A portion of ticket sales is donated to the Vikingsholm Restoration at Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe. For reservations, call the Tahoe Queen at 530-541-3364 or the M.S. Dixie II at 775-588-3508.
