The historic Thunderbird Lodge, built in 1936 by San Francisco millionaire George Whittell, is an excellent example of the "old Tahoe" architectural style and craftsmanship. The Lodge is open for guided tours during the summer months. The tours take visitors on an hour and fifteen minute walk throughout the Whittell estate, including the Lighthouse Room, the Old Lodge, the maids' quarters and original kitchen, as well as a trip through the 600-foot underground tunnel leading to the infamous Card House and Boat House. In the Boat House you may find the fabulous yacht, Thunderbird, built for George Whittell in 1939. The yacht is a 55' long, John Hacker design with mahogany hull and dual aircraft engines and is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece built in a bygone era.

| The tour then follows the Dragon's Tail path, past the waterfall and fountain to our Museum Store. In addition to the guided tours, the Thunderbird Lodge offers a stunning location for weddings, conferences, corporate and special events. The Lodge is operated by the non-profit Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society. The Society offers many levels of membership to support its mission to: (a) to preserve and protect the Thunderbird Lodge as a historic site with National significance; (b) promote public appreciation and education regarding the unique historical, cultural, and architectural significance of the Thunderbird Lodge; and (c) assist and participate in the important region-wide efforts and programs committed to the study and preservation of the fragile Lake Tahoe environment. |
